SK Battery America laid off 958 people at its Commerce plant in March 2026, with Friday, March 6, as their last working day. The plant made batteries for Ford’s F-150 Lightning, and in December 2025 Ford ended production of the battery-electric Lightning and its joint venture with SK. The plant has not closed. About 1,600 people still work there, and it also supplies Volkswagen. It opened in January 2022 as a $2.6 billion facility.
The town’s mill era ended earlier: Harmony Grove Mills, organized in 1893, closed in the spring of 2004 and was sold for warehouse storage. Southeast Toyota Distributors’ vehicle processing center has been here since 1989, on what the city calls the largest rail spur in Georgia. Tanger Outlets is at Exit 149, Banks Crossing, where the interchange actually sits in Banks County even though the stores use Commerce addresses. Exit 147, GA-98, is the town’s other exit.
The Jackson County Economic Development Alliance lists more industrial space around town, including Ridgeway 85 Logistics Center, 315,000 square feet across from SK Battery. Down I-85 at Exit 137, in Pendergrass, Siemens announced in August 2026 that it plans more than 1,400 jobs over three years at a new plant making low-voltage electrical components. Buildout is scheduled to start in November 2026, with hiring set to begin in 2027.
