Between 2010 and 2024, Whitfield County’s housing inventory grew 2.3 percent, against about 13 percent statewide, according to Believe Greater Dalton. Over twelve years the county added more than 4,000 jobs but fewer than 400 housing units. That’s a shortage, not a boom. Completed projects include Patterson Farms, Walton Fields, The Lofts at Hamilton and The Dalton by Alta, apartments on the old county jail site. The Hamilton Street Rural Workforce Housing Project has broken ground.
Flooring is what Dalton is known for. Shaw Industries has its headquarters on East Walnut Avenue; Mohawk Industries, which the county’s joint development authority describes as the world’s largest flooring company, operates here; and Novalis makes luxury vinyl tile. White Flyer makes clay targets here too, and GEDIA makes vehicle body and chassis parts. The bad news came in October 2025, when Mannington Mills announced it was leaving the residential carpet business and cutting 211 jobs, about 150 of them in Dalton.
The newer arrivals aren’t flooring. Core Scientific already has a data center site on Industrial South Road and two more planned on Old Tilton Road, where county commissioners rezoned more than 170 acres to heavy manufacturing. Marvin, the window and door maker, says hiring for its new Dalton distribution center is expected to begin late in 2026.
